What are side swept bangs?
Side swept bangs are a long fringe parted to one side that falls diagonally across the forehead toward the opposite temple. Unlike straight-across bangs, they leave part of the forehead showing and create an angle across the face. That angle is what makes them so flattering on many face shapes: it breaks up width and draws the eye toward the cheekbones.
Who side swept bangs suit
- Round faces: the diagonal line adds angles and makes the face read longer and slimmer.
- Square faces: soft, wispy ends balance a strong forehead and jaw.
- Heart-shaped faces: they narrow a wider forehead while keeping the focus on the eyes.
- Long faces: they cover part of the forehead without the heaviness of a full fringe.
- Thin or fine hair: one sweep needs less hair than a full fringe to look full.
When to think twice
- A strong cowlick on the side you want to sweep toward can fight the direction.
- If you only ever wear your hair up and back, you may find a fringe gets in the way.
What to tell your stylist
Tell your stylist which side you naturally part on. Bangs work with that part, not against it. Ask for long side swept bangs that start at about eyebrow height on the short side and blend down to the cheekbone on the long side, with soft, point-cut ends rather than a blunt line. Showing your SnipMirror preview makes the length easy to agree on.
How to style side swept bangs
- Blow-dry them in the opposite direction first, then sweep them over. This adds lift at the root.
- Finish with a flat brush or your fingers, directing the hair diagonally across.
- A light-hold cream or a mist of hairspray keeps the sweep in place all day.
- Trim every 6 to 8 weeks. Side bangs are forgiving as they grow.
